The launch was the culmination of a year's worth of planning and is something I'm very proud to have been involved with. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation ran a 3-day writing workshop with the Indigenous students at Concordia Lutheran College, where I work as a librarian, in May this year. Author Claire Scobie, poet Kristine Ellis, and Kathy Mossop from the ILF ran writing exercises, group discussions, art exercises and role-playing exercises and had the draft of the book ready by the end of day three. The book tells the story of a fictional Palm Island girl, Jaz, who leaves her home to come to boarding school in Toowoomba. The book was launched by Dame Quentin Bryce in the beautiful 'Angel's Palace' (designed by artist Gordon Hookey) at the State Library of QLD during the Brisbane Writers' Festival. It was a wonderful day and a great story by a fantastic bunch of kids.
